Years ago, while I was learning how to sew, I decided to make a surprise dress for my little sister. I was excited and eager to get the job done. In my enthusiasm, I didn't wait for my instructor to properly guide me through the process. Fiam! Before anyone could stop me, I had already cut the fabric, or perhaps sliced it would be a better description.
Basking in the euphoria of what I thought was a major accomplishment, I proudly presented the neatly cut pieces to my instructor. She looked at them and asked a simple question: "Where is the zip allowance?" My heart sank. In my haste, I had forgotten to leave extra fabric for the zipper.
The dress could not be assembled the way it was intended. Everyone had a good laugh that day. But I cried. I cried because what I thought would be a proud achievement became a laughable mistake. Looking back, I realized that if I had waited just a few more minutes for my instructor's guidance, I could have avoided the error altogether.
Pause and think about that. How often do we do the same thing in our spiritual lives? We rush ahead making decisions, mapping out our future, and taking charge of our plans without consulting our divine Coach, the Holy Spirit. Confident in our own abilities, we take the wheel and leave Him in the back seat. Then come the wrong turns, disappointments, frustrations, and regrets. Only afterward do we discover where we went wrong.
The problem was never that our Driver was absent. The problem was that we refused to let Him drive.
But my sewing story didn't end with tears. After everyone had finished laughing, my instructor examined my mistake and showed me how to work around it. Together, we transformed what looked like a ruined project into a beautiful design I had never imagined. To my surprise, the finished dress turned out even better than the one I originally envisioned. What I considered a disaster became a masterpiece.
And isn't that just like God? When we recognize our mistakes, repent, and invite Him back into our decisions, He takes the very mess we are ashamed of and transforms it into a testimony of His grace.
He specializes in turning broken pieces into beautiful creations. The fragments of what we thought were ruined can become something fit for a King. What an amazing God we serve!
So yes, it is wiser to seek God's direction from the beginning and spare ourselves the pain of unnecessary detours. But even when we have wandered off course, His mercy still welcomes us back. And when we return to the Master's feet and humbly pray, "Lord, I missed it. Would You please fix me?" He doesn't turn us away.
Instead, He lovingly takes what is broken and creates something more beautiful than we ever imagined.
